The Polar Vortex & Me

Fun!Navigate with Style3 Comments

When the snow started late last Saturday, I was thrilled at the prospect of being snowed in with my little family. I stocked up on groceries and wine, arranged craft projects and looked forward to days on end in pajamas watching movies. Sunday and Monday (supposed to be the first day back to school) were exactly what I'd had in mind. We painted wooden boats, I completed a piece of "art" for the dining room and tried multiple recipe pins from my overstuffed Pinterest account - many of which were promptly unpinned after they turned out to be shite.

On Tuesday, despite the icy and uncleared roads in our city, my husband had to go back to his office while schools remained closed. I typically spend lots of time at home with my boys but being holed up was starting to take its toll. I needed a shower, we'd watched way too much TV and my wine supply had run dry. I put the babe down for his nap and attempted to get some work done while the 5 year old watched his 73rd episode of Ninjago. The babe woke up bawling just 30 minutes later and when I went to pluck him from the crib to soothe him, he looked more like Raging Bull than the cutest 9 month old on the planet (well, he is) thanks to a still unidentified allergic reaction.  The emergency trip to our doctor was followed by a Target run for his prescription which turned out to be just the thing we needed. We had the store to ourselves, found fun Yo Gabba Gabba footie pajamas for the 5 year old on clearance, bought more wine and groceries and sat down for some coffee at Starbucks. It was almost as restorative as a trip to Tahiti might be.

Schools were closed Wednesday and late that afternoon, word spread Thursday classes would be cancelled as well. That's approximately the moment I snapped. My patience had worn thin and my husband could tell I needed a break from the tone of my texts. He suggested I ask some fellow mothers (also on the verge of a breakdown) out for a drink. Genius! Three of us mums flew our coops for a few glasses of wine and greasy food. It was the perfect antidote to 4 straight days on lockdown with a 5th day looming.

When I woke up on Thursday, I felt like a new woman. But we needed to look at fresh faces. I took my boys to my brother's house where my boys could play with their cousins and I could hang with my sister in law. Later, while the older kids made a snow fort and tunnel, I went on another Target run (for wine...and other things) with the babe.

Also on this day, I learned a friend who had been battling an aggressive and quickly spreading cancer had passed away. She was a mother of three young boys whose beautiful exterior matched her inner being. Her Facebook posts were incredibly touching these past few months and her grace and strength inspiring. My struggles from the previous few days were certainly put into perspective. I am thankful to be alive and healthy and present for my family. My hope is that I can access this gratitude during future trying, yet trivial, moments - of which I'm sure there will be many.

I filled Friday with errands and a trip to our fantastic science museum for kids followed by an extended family lunch. I ended the day by getting in a much needed workout then cuddling up with the 5 year old and my husband to watch Hugo (I fell asleep quickly).

Today is Saturday and I'm looking forward to a quiet, normal weekend while the dreary rain washes away the 10+ inches of snow on the ground. I'm fairly certain school will be in session on Monday. It better be.

Just a smidge of DIY...

Fun!Navigate with Style2 Comments

We've been getting down with a bit of  DIY at Chez Fox lately. Here's what we've been up to:

 * We bought a microfiber couch a few years ago and were told that it would be so easy to keep clean. If your a microfiber couch owner, I'd guess you rolled your eyes when you read that last sentence. After 5 years with a rambunctious and messy little boy, our couch was disgustingWe tried microfiber cleaning cloths and dry sponges but nothing worked. In a last ditch effort before tossing it, we tried this tip I found via Pinterest using rubbing alcohol. I'm so f^@&ing thrilled to report it worked marvelously!!

It's not perfect but it's fun.

 * I've taken up cross-stitch. I'm not actually sure what possessed me but I'm having a ton of fun teaching myself and making up my own patterns. Here's a peek at my first attempt. Clearly, I have a fondness for the F-bomb. Friends and family should be cringing at the thought of what they might be getting from me for Foxmas this year.

 * Something came over me this morning and I made oatmeal chocolate chip cookies from scratch. What?! I'm not great at baking so this is a major triumph for me. BONUS: they're actually edible.

The October List

Beauty, Fashion, Fun!Navigate with StyleComment

This month's to do's (it involves a lot of pumpkins)...

 * Whip up a pumpkin body scrub by mixing about 1/2 cup coconut oil and 1 cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice and a few shakes of ground cinnamon. Adjust the amount of oil and sugar until you achieve the desired consistency. I like it rough so I use less oil.

* Visiting a pumpkin patch or apple orchard is a favorite activity of the season. To find a pumpkin patch in your state click here. For apples, click here. I can't wait to take my family to the Lincoln Ridge Pumpkin & Mum Festival in Ohio.

* Need more pumpkin in your life? Follow Pumpkinita on Instagram. She posts super creative and mouthwatering ideas.

* How did we survive without Pinterest? Falling for Fall, their latest seasonal board, highlights warm, cozy and inviting recipes and decor ideas.

My go-to ensemble for the season. The beanie hides the disaster that is my hair.

* I like to dress in uniforms - it makes getting out the door each morning much easier. The blueprint for my Fall dressing relies on light layers in neutrals with a few pops of green. A light scarf keeps me cozy when it's crisp or stashes easily in my handbag when the sun is shining. Cool stud earrings (that tiny and slobbery hands can't pull on) and flat soled boots pull the look together.

So, how long until October is just renamed Pumpkin Spice?

...for now! The nursery is done and we're totally moved in to our new home (not fully settled, but that's another story). I'm in the home stretch so I'm taking a smidge of a break to enjoy these last few days with my family and catch a few naps before boy #2 arrives!

Ciao, baby!

paint chip palettes...

Fashion, Fun!Navigate with StyleComment

When I'm feeling uninspired, I look for cues from various sources. Sometimes I find myself in the paint aisle, browsing the sample cards of Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Ralph Lauren. These cards often give me some ideas to play around with which also helps me to imagine new ways to introduce various hues into my ensembles.

INSPIRATION: Tone on tone. Focus on textures to break up the monochromatic look and mix with neutral or metallic accessories for depth. Favorite tonal combos of mine are fuchsia with petal pink, burgundy with red or orange, violet with lilac or emerald with mint.

INSPIRATION: Complementary colors. While choosing paint for my living room, I gathered cards that featured color schemes for entire rooms. I walked away with paint cans for my house and a color plan for my Spring/Summer wardrobe.

INSPIRATION: Pattern play. I've now seen cards that feature patterns and the above and below combos look a little Proenza Schouler to me. Fun!

nesting...

Fun!Navigate with StyleComment

At 35 weeks, my nesting instinct is kicking in pretty hard right now. We're also in the process of moving so I haven't been able to do much work on #2's nursery. During my first pregnancy we also moved when I was 8 months pregnant (what is our deal?) and I had to kick out the jams to get the nursery done in time. But, my son didn't really sleep in his nursery until about six months so this time around I'm trying to be a bit more relaxed...trying.

I've been pinning and shopping and planning so that I can have the groundwork done before delivery day. I'm going for a very clean, crisp and modern nautical vibe in grey and blue, in homage to the inspiration behind #2's name, the enchanting island of Nantucket, where my husband and I truly fell in love.

Here are just a few of the accessories I'm using to get that weathered, East Coast island feel:

pregnancy is hard...

Fashion, Beauty, Fun!Navigate with StyleComment

I'm firmly in the third trimester of my second (and final) pregnancy. My first pregnancy was a dream - I felt so great and happy that I could have gone on being pregnant forever. This time? Oy...

This pregnancy has zapped my energy, my hair and skin are blah and my style has slowly been sucked away. I have massive lower back pain, can barely manage a quick trip to Target (sadness) and have hormones that make me quite crabby at times. I have been doing a bit of yoga and am trying to be as organic as possible with my food and beauty choices but I can't say I always succeed on that front.

In terms of style, I do have a little bit going for me this time around. I no longer work in an office so I don't have to worry about what's work appropriate. I've embraced a very easy uniform of black leggings and tanks under cozy cardigans and have been heavily relying on accessories and jewels to keep things as interesting as possible. As soon as I get home I throw on large men's sweatpants and a t shirt...the epitome of chic, right?

my belly at 30 weeks...check out my outie!

priority parking for the expecting...so helpful!

I know there have been many pregnant women before me with the same feelings and I certainly won't be the last. In fact, I'm so thankful to have a cadre of friends that can relate. And, in the grand scheme of things, these issues of mine take a backseat to the more serious complications of other pregnancies.

The bottom line is...I don't know what the bottom line is. I'm just a little frustrated and needed to vent. I see a nap in my near future...

A few little things that have been bringing me joy during these last few weeks:

* peppermint tea

* Origins Ginger Body Gloss

* belly hugs and kisses from my 4 year old boy

* a kick ass Alexis Bittar ring that I want to wear 24 hours a day

* perusing Pinterest for nursery decor and baby announcement ideas

style resolutions...

Fashion, Beauty, Fun!Navigate with Style2 Comments

As Christmas and the New Year approach, I have resolutions on the brain. Of course, I have some more meaningful changes to make in 2013 but let's just have fun with my style resolutions, 'kay?

* wear more color...It's easy to slide into a uniform of basic black so I'll be integrating more vibrant hues into my wardrobe this year.

* embrace prints...I tend to have issues with prints due to my curves but I love to have fun with my clothing so I'll be pushing myself a bit out of my comfort zone here.

* ditch nail art...I'm just a little sick of the sloppy looking polish out there. Classic mani's are where it's at!

* get back to more organic/natural products...I haven't been as strict with my beauty purchases in the last few months so I'll be returning to my organic faves and trying out some new launches --- because I'm worth it.

* work with what I've got...I need to make more of an effort to wear what I already own, remix my closet, jewelry box, accessories. Part of the challenge here is to re-organize so I can see it all in the first place!

What are your style resolutions for 2013? Tweet them to me at @navigatewstyle

ps - My boy is now on school vacation so I'm taking a bit of a break from blogging to fully maximize my time with him. See you in 2013!

why don't you...

...get more from your hairspray? I have cans and cans of spray but I only use them a few times a year. Here's how I make those cans work double duty:

* Spray the reinforced toes of nylons and tights to help prevent runs. I've even sprayed my legs very lightly once the nylons are on.

* Get gum out of carpet by freezing it with a blast of hair spray before scraping.

* Spray a light coating over my son's artwork to keep the paint and glued on materials last longer.

* Keep cut flowers for a bit longer by giving them a distant quick spritz underneath petals and flowers.

* Make your shoe polish last a bit longer with a light spray. I've very rarely polish my shoes but this does help to keep the shine from fading as fast.

survive the end times in style...

Fun!Navigate with StyleComment

In preparation for the end of the world, I've compiled a list to make sure you pillage and scrap for survival in style...you're welcome.

* A cross body bag will keep you hands free and allows for easing looting. Also, load up on lightweight, folding bags in case you come across more goods than your single bag can carry.

* Look to your jewelry box for extra security. Spiked and studded jewels can help to ward off predators...think of these pieces as your uber fashionable quills, tusks and horns.

* Stock up on organic beans. Just because it's the end of the world doesn't mean you have to subject yourself to cancer causing pesticides.

* A collapsible pouch style water bottle takes up no room and no lbs when empty. Bright colors and patterns will keep your hydration on the go fun!

* Comfy wedge booties give you extra height but without the pain of a heel...the rising popularity of the sneaker wedge is no coincidence. Marc Jacobs cited the end of the Mayan Calendar as his inspiration for creating a shoe that looks super cool yet will be functional during a worldwide crisis. ***lies, all lies

* Dress in lots of thin layers. You'll need to be able to wear everything you keep because you won't want to be carting around a suitcase. Stick to neutrals for easy blending. I suggest the DKNY Classic Cozy sweater because it can be worn in so many different ways.

* Hook yourself up with a multitasking implement like a chic, printed Swiss Army knife. You'll be able to filet roadkill, open beer bottles (you should be so lucky), file your nails into sharp points, tweeze your brows and defend yourself against attackers all with one tool.

* You'll need a flashlight and it'd be useful to have a radio around just in case someone is broadcasting...I like this all in one device that even can charge your smartphone!

* Grab a stick of eye black which will help to reduce the glare of the sun which will no doubt be bouncing off all the shattered glass. This can also be used to create a sexy, smoky eye if you've got a hot, post crisis date.

Best wishes to all!

to poof or not to poof...

Fashion, Fun!Navigate with Style2 Comments

If you know me but at all, you know that I adore cranial accessories. I love bows, clips, headbands, flowers, pins, feathers, turbans, hats, scarves, poofs and any other variety you could throw at me - even the fallopian tube fascinator worn by Princess Beatrice at the wedding of Wills & Kate. I wore a jaunty, minty poof on a television segment last week that drew some criticism on social media...

Like Andy Cohen says, here's what:

Style is subjective. Like any other form of expression, how stylish one might be can always be up for debate. I welcome this idea - it's part of the reason I felt compelled to start blogging a few years ago. Style can mean many different things to many different kinds of people and I like to embrace and celebrate that notion. I'm all about having fun and I love a good laugh...especially in my wardrobe. I don't like to take things too seriously and sometimes I just need some extra flair to get through the day. Sue  me.

The critical post basically claimed that my poof was small town, not big city. On this I disagree. This person may not have liked my poof and that's fine. But to allege that such a thing would never be seen in a large metropolitan area is just silly. I have lived in Boston, Massachusetts and spent a semester of college in London. I have visited European cities and have friends from all over the world. While I wish I could travel more, I'm certainly not a stranger to culture or diversity of style. Furthermore, some very high profile ladies within the fashion industry are known for wearing such things as poofs atop their heads. Google Anna Dello Russo, Tavi Gevinson or Anna Piaggi to see some examples. In addition to women who are known for taking repeated fashion risks, there are others who occasionally step outside their comfort zone to try something new or edgy - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Yes, even Heidi Klum has had some misses

So, to poof or not to poof...I will always choose to poof. And guest what? I have bigger.

The offending poof...

desk set...

Fun!Navigate with Style2 Comments

I've uprooted my home office to make way for baby Fox #2. How am I coping with this? By dreaming up ways to accessorize the small desk that now lives in my bedroom. Whether your work area is in your home or at an office, here are some fun ways to add personality to your space:

* Repurpose old household items - A tea cup for paper clips, a vase for your writing utensils, pretty bowls for miscellaneous bits and bobs and a cool napkin holder for stashing note pads. Use a funky tray to hold the vessels to keep everything corralled.

* Bring some real life to the space - If you have a window, bring in a low maintenance plant or a small bouquet of fresh flowers. If you work in a cave, air plants are for you! Suspend them in open glass ornaments or in a few shallow dishes around your space. Give 'em a spritz of water every few days to keep them alive (though, I'm no green thumb).

* Standard office lighting is pretty harsh and unforgiving - Add an attractive desk lamp and turn off the overheads. Just make sure the lamp gives off enough light so you don't fall asleep on the job!

* Look for unique versions of basic office accessories - Instead of boring dry erase boards and cork boards go for colorful and interesting shapes. Hang notes and pictures on a suspended magnetic cord with bright magnets or on twine with clothespins.
